It's more than just clean water

We are a not-for-profit organization working across East Africa. Our focus is on ensuring schools, medical clinics and remote communities have access to safe, clean drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Our Beginning

In November 2007, Pete and Sharon Crean were living in Sydney, Australia. They were presented with the fact that one billion people don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water and another two billion people don’t have the use of a toilet. They gathered a team of volunteers who were enthusiastic about acting to alleviate poverty in East Africa, and BeyondWater was established.

In 2012 they moved to Nairobi, Kenya to build a team of nationals who they would work alongside them to expand the work further. Slowly, a team was built and the work expanded even further.

Boards were established in Kenya and New Zealand, in addition to the one in Australia.

In 2021, Mary Mwikali took the lead role of East Africa Director.

2023 saw a Board of Directors and a 503(c) founded in the USA.

Our Approach

Our key focus areas are schools, medical clinics, and remote communities across 7 countries in East Africa – Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and the DRC.

We work alongside community groups who already have proven themselves on making an impact in their local area. The needs are identified and together we work on simple, effective solutions. Locals are employed in labour, catering, goods are sourced from businesses in the area – all contributing to creating self sustaining communities.
